When it comes to cleaning area rugs and carpets between your yearly cleanings with our team, there’s definitely a right way and a wrong way to do things. We often notice issues between cleanings, such as bleach and chemical burns, or damaged carpeting from improper maintenance. In fact, we had a carpet cleaning job for a returning client last week in Woodbridge that inspired us to address this issue and write an article, so we’ll get straight to the point.
1. Don’t use stain remover chemicals
While it may be tempting to scrub away at a fresh stain, don’t! Many off-the-shelf stain removers will permanently change the color of your carpet and fail to remove the stain altogether (or even create a new one). If you’re concerned about a fresh stain, contact our team and schedule your yearly cleaning a bit early with a specialized spot treatment.
2. Use a good vacuum
Another common issue we encounter is clients using weak vacuums. Sometimes vacuums are outdated or haven’t been cleaned properly, and sometimes the battery simply isn’t charged. Having a good vacuum is important because it will remove more than just surface-level contaminants, helping to prevent allergens, dirt buildup, and dry stains.
3. Take your time when vacuuming
Similar to our carpet flushing techniques, which you can read about on our site, taking your time when vacuuming is crucial. No matter how good your vacuum is, it won’t work as effectively if you move it too quickly across your carpets. Slow, gentle movements are best—not only to pick up items and debris on the surface, but also to clean deeper between the fibers, where contaminants can easily build up and hide.
While we can’t stress enough that yearly cleaning is essential, regular maintenance is just as important. If you follow these tips, your carpets will stay cleaner longer and even get cleaner each time our team (or another team) comes by.
